Participants painting the floor mural at the Wright Street makeover

The City of Belmont’s Wright Street has undergone a colourful transformation. This youth-led makeover makes it safer and easier for the community to get around. It has combined vibrant public art with practical safety improvements. The project was made possible by the City of Belmont, who championed the new zebra crossing and lighting. It was supported by The Y, who engaged artist Harley and the Belmont Forum to bring the space to life.

The project addressed a major safety concern. Many people were crossing Wright Street at a dangerous spot without a proper crossing. The Wright Street Makeover Project used creative design to improve road safety. The results were unveiled on 6 December 2025 with a celebration event at Belmont Forum with the help of The Y.

A co-designed community space

The Y and the City put local young people in charge. They gave them a platform to create a space that reflects their community. More than 30 young local people teamed up with Noongar artist Harley Richards to bring this vision to life.

Together, they created a large footpath mural and decorative bollard covers. These features act as a visual guide, naturally directing pedestrians, bike riders, and scooter users away from high-risk areas and toward the new zebra crossing.

The crossing now has better lighting. It creates a safe path to these local spots:

  • Belmont Forum
  • Belmont Hub and Ruth Faulkner Library
  • The City of Belmont council building
  • Belmont City College
  • Nearby high-frequency bus stops

Celebrating youth voice

The community celebrated the project with a youth-led launch. City of Belmont Mayor Robert Rossi attended, along with leaders from The Y and RAC.

The event showcased local talent and community spirit. It featured free bike safety checks, a sausage sizzle, henna art, and a photo booth. The young creators also showed off the decorative bollard covers they designed for the area.

The Wright Street Makeover shows the power of championing young voices. This work has created a more connected and vibrant community for everyone.

How you can get involved

This is just one example of what happens when young people have the chance to reimagine their community. Each project is special, but they all empower young people to work together to enact real change in their streets and neighbourhoods.
