From a young age, Alex was captivated by the work of Australia’s greatest motoring writers including Bill Tuckey, Mel Nichols and Peter Robinson. Before he’d graduated university, Alex landed a job writing a weekly column in The West Australian newspaper called Idle Torque, which ran for 21 years and became Australia’s longest-running motoring column. His book of the same name was published in 2021. Alex has competed in several classic rallying events and as a guest driver in open-wheeler competition. He has been entrusted to road test some of the world’s most valuable cars, including a Jaguar E-Type Lightweight, Ferrari F40 and Lamborghini Aventador. Alex was an Australia’s Best Cars judge for 10 years and has been road testing new cars for RAC for 20 years. He is a parenting apprentice under the informative guidance of his three kids and likes to regularly go rowing on the Swan River for a rest from all that learning. He has owned his motoring muse, a 1968 Volvo 1800S, for 36 years.
