Sure, its name may sound like one of the Muppets, but the Suzuki Fronx’s name is a casual abbreviation by Suzuki of ‘Frontier Crossover’.
With the arrival of the Fronx in July 2025, aspiring frontiersmen and frontierswomen now have three Suzuki models to choose from in the light SUV category (others being the Jimny and Ignis).
While conquering distant frontiers may be pushing it for a small front-wheel drive SUV with a 1.5-litre petrol engine and 16-inch wheels with no spare, its early sales since launch were strong.
That was helped along by some sharp launch pricing at $29,990, but that’s now reverted to $31,790.
The Fronx’s 1.5-litre does get a small electric boost from the car’s mild hybrid system, which consists of a 12-volt lithium-ion battery and an integrated starter/generator (ISG), which replaces the alternator.
The ISG makes for much smoother engine starting when the stop/start system operates. Then, when working as a generator, the ISG charges the 12-volt lithium battery. The energy in the battery is then used to assist in acceleration and restarting the engine.
In practice, the electric assistance under acceleration is very mild and virtually indiscernible. This is somewhat exacerbated by the six-speed transmission, which does let the engine rev out seemingly excessively.
It’s pleasing to see the Fronx only requires 91 RON petrol to achieve its mandated test result of 4.9L/100km. Though in mostly urban driving, we saw an average of 6.9L/100km.
There’s only one variant available, and it’s quite well equipped, with wireless charging and heated seats.
Yes, cheaper options are available from challenger brands like Chery and MG. And while the Fronx isn’t a bastion of refinement and power, it’s also a pretty well-specified little SUV for the money, and from an established brand, which is still important to many.
