The yellow and red ‘Do Not Overtake Turning Vehicle’ signs on the rear of some heavy vehicles or vehicle combinations, indicate that the vehicle has permission to turn from a lane other than the usual turning lane.
A standard vehicle must turn left from the left lane and right from the right lane, but a vehicle displaying the ‘Do Not Overtake Turning Vehicle’ sign may use the adjacent marked lane when turning, if the legal conditions are met.
If a vehicle displaying the sign is indicating and turning, other drivers should not attempt to pass it on the turning side unless it is safe to do so.
For the vehicle to lawfully occupy the next marked lane when turning, it must be 7.5 metres or longer, display the sign at the rear, be within 50 metres of the intersection, and be in a situation where it is not practical to make the turn from the usual turning lane alone.
The driver must also be able to occupy the next marked lane, and complete the turn, safely.
