Recalls are commonplace. They happen nearly daily, no carmaker is immune and most require only minor action to rectify a problem or issue to keep you and others safe.
Even brands with the highest reputations for reliability like Toyota and Mazda conduct recalls.
According to the Federal Government’s infrastructure.gov.au website, “a vehicle or component recall can occur if there is a safety issue that may cause injury or if the vehicle or component does not comply with applicable standards.”
A carmaker and/or importer is legally required to fix a problem for free once a defect has been identified that poses a safety risk or fails to meet minimum safety standards.
Plus, recalls are happening more often than ever before, due to a dramatic increase in software technology prone to glitches.
To illustrate how regularly they occur, here is a list of all the published recalls involving cars, SUVs, utes and vans in Australia over a recent seven-day period, from 9 to16 July, 2026. In just a single, random week, tens of thousands of vehicles were recalled in this country.
In the list below, some brands are over-represented simply because of our chosen timeframe. Take in the entire year to date, and 29 manufacturers have issued recalls, including multiple ones from Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Toyota and more.

What are the defects?
Due to a manufacturing defect, moisture may be able to enter the starter motor causing corrosion and result in the engine not starting. Additionally, this may cause a short circuit while the vehicle is in operation or parked, potentially leading to a vehicle fire.

What are the defects?

What are the defects?
Due to a manufacturing defect, the starter motor solenoid switch can experience increased wear that could cause an internal short circuit. If this occurs, the driver may be unable to start the engine, and in the worst case, the overheating can lead to a fire during vehicle operation.

What are the defects?

What are the defects?
Due to a manufacturing issue, vehicles with 8F57 transmission may contain an Electronic One-Way Clutch Assembly built with an unseated snap ring. This may cause an unexpected loss of first and/or reverse gear resulting in a sudden loss of forward or reverse movement of the vehicle.

What are the defects?

What are the defects?
Due to a manufacturing defect, the anchorage tensioner stopper for the seatbelts in the front seating positions may lose tension. If this occurs the anchorage may become dislodged and as a result, the seat belt may not operate as intended.
