Though besotted by cars and writing from early childhood, Byron resisted turning his passions into a career for fear of falling out of love with them, so explored other interests, including advertising, travel, music, acting, theatre, modelling and hospitality. But a job listing in 1997 at what is now GoAuto.com.au felt like it was time to follow his heart and learn automotive journalism from scratch, beginning a four-decade association with the publication. Freelance career highlights include Wheels magazine from 2009 to 2021 (with 11 years as a Car of the Year judge), RAC WA from 2019 and CarsGuide from 2020.
