Most Western Australians have done a road trip or two. Down south, up north or maybe across the Nullarbor. But very few people have set themselves the goal of visiting every town on the map. WA photographer Aaron Green has attempted to do just that.

Through his ongoing project Land’s Unseen, Aaron is travelling solo across the state in a modified Toyota Landcruiser Troop Carrier, documenting more than 650 towns and ghost towns; from well-known regional centres to settlements barely marked on modern maps.

In this episode of the Horizons by RAC Podcast, Aaron joins host Myke Bartlett to talk about life on the road, the small towns that surprised him most, and what you discover about yourself when you spend long stretches of time travelling alone in remote WA.

After returning from overseas travel, Aaron found himself drawn not to another international adventure, but to his own backyard. An electrician by trade, Aaron armed himself with a camera and a basic four-wheel drive; he began exploring regional WA, learning photography, navigation, and off-road travel through trial and error.

Over years of solo travel, he’s discovered that some of WA’s most rewarding places are the ones people are most likely to drive straight past. From regional service towns to near-forgotten settlements and ghost towns, he explains why slowing down, talking to locals and stepping off the highway can completely change how you experience the state.

Aaron also reflects on the realities of travelling alone for long periods, isolation, risks, and quiet moments that force self-reflection. He shares how remote travel strips away distraction, sharpens awareness, and reveals not just the landscape, but parts of yourself that are often drowned out by everyday noise.

For listeners interested in exploring Western Australia, this episode offers both inspiration and perspective. Aaron talks candidly about preparation, mindset and curiosity, and why meaningful road trips aren’t about ticking off landmarks, but about understanding the places, and the people, in between.
