RAC, in partnership with Purple Hands Foundation, is helping bring road safety education directly into classrooms across the Kimberley, giving young students the knowledge and confidence to make safer decisions on and around the road.
Road safety is the latest life skill kids in the Kimberley are learning as part of Kimberley Connected, with 34 schools successfully completing RAC’s Road Safety Workshop to improve their knowledge about seatbelts, helmets and bike safety.
Kimberley Connected is Purple Hands Foundation's innovative youth engagement program using football to help young people develop important life skills including healthy eating, active lifestyles, the impact of connection to culture and caring for Country.
RAC’s Road Safety Workshop has been designed specifically for the Kimberley and has seen teachers lead engaging, hands-on lessons that help students understand the importance of wearing seatbelts and helmets, conducting basic bike safety checks and following road rules.
Students who have shown strong engagement throughout the program have been invited to participate in the Kimberley 9s footy carnival in Broome this week, where some will stay at RAC Cable Beach Holiday Park and take part in rotations of football matches and health and wellbeing workshops.
RAC Head of Communications, Rhys Heron said " As the Official Road Safety Partner of the Fremantle Dockers, we feel privileged to be part of Kimberley Connected for the first time this year, and to have the opportunity to bring road safety education directly into Kimberley classrooms.
RAC is passionate about helping young people gain the knowledge and confidence to make safer choices, with a goal to help prevent serious injuries and save lives," Mr Heron said.
"Road safety education is most effective when it's delivered early and in ways that are engaging and relevant, and what better way than through sport? Through this partnership, we hope to create positive long-term outcomes for young people across the Kimberley."
Kimberley Connected is run by the Purple Hands Foundation, the official charity of the Fremantle Football Club in partnership with WA Police.
The Kimberley 9s footy carnival is taking place in Broome on 28 and 29 October.
