RAC is reminding West Aussies to plan road trips extra carefully this holiday season, with forecast extreme temperatures increasing the risk of becoming stranded.

RAC Manager Vehicles and Fuels Alex Forrest said the combination of intense heat, longer journeys, and often high speeds, can create a volatile environment.

“We’re asking people not to become complacent,” Mr Forrest said.

“The hot weather makes roads and highways very unforgiving, increasing the risk of tyre blow-outs and overheating engines – putting drivers and their families in potentially dangerous situations.”

Cost of living pressures remain a challenge for many families, but Mr Forrest said it’s important to prioritise car maintenance when planning a summer trip away.

“Many people use their cars very differently during the holidays, whether that’s hitching up a trailer, carrying more cargo, travelling at higher speeds or all of the above,” Mr Forrest said.

“Make sure your tyres are at the right pressures and have plenty of tread, your indicators and brake lights are working and check your oil and water – these simple actions could make a huge difference.”

For those planning a Christmas or New Year getaway, there could be some early cheer at the petrol pump.

“Crude oil prices are trending down, and our exchange rate is recovering, which is much better news for consumers,” Mr Forrest said.

“If this trend continues, drivers should start to see some relief at the bowser with average prices staying well under the $2.00 a litre peaks we’ve been seeing for the past few months.”

With Perth’s weekly petrol price cycle still in play, it’s important drivers still shop around for the best deal.

“As prices come down, it’s not unusual to see retailer margins start to creep up, and we’ve seen that over recent weeks. Stay vigilant, look out for the best deals and check Fuelwatch regularly to make sure you’re not getting ripped off,” Mr Forrest said.

“Tuesdays are the cheapest day of the week to fill up, but if you need to top up more frequently, Sundays and Mondays are the next cheapest days.”
