Canning Vale and Willetton have been revealed as the WA suburbs with the biggest increases in electric vehicles.
Department of Transport electric vehicle registration figures for the June quarter show postcode 6155 (Canning Vale / Willetton) at the top of the list, followed by 6018 – which includes Churchlands, Doubleview, Gwelup, Innaloo, Woodlands and Karrinyup.
Crawley, Dalkeith and Nedlands (6009) had the third-highest uptake.
RAC General Manager External Relations Will Golsby said the data reveals a spread of EV sales across the metropolitan area.
“While there are still barriers preventing many West Australians from making the switch to electric, there are encouraging signs that suggest more people in more areas are seeing it as a viable option,” Mr Golsby said.
According to the WA Department of Transport, there were a total of 11,163 EVs registered in WA at the end of the June quarter. Tesla remains the most popular EV brand in WA, followed by BYD - a market newcomer to WA in 2023.
“We’re starting to see more makes and models arriving to the WA car market, which means more choice for car buyers who may be considering an electric vehicle,” Mr Golsby said.
It comes as new data from the Australian Automobile Association also revealed a surge in sales of new hybrid vehicles across the nation.
RAC members still say the high cost of EVs is the main reason they wouldn’t consider buying one.
“We know the initial price tag for an EV still puts them out of reach for many in our community,” Mr Golsby said.
“While the WA Government is taking positive steps to increase the amount of EV chargers around our state, a lack of charging stations also remains a key concern for car buyers.”
“To keep the momentum going we need governments to continue to invest in charging infrastructure and develop stronger policies that bring more affordable vehicle options to Western Australia.”
