Can I apply for an IDP if I’m on ‘P’ plates?
Anyone over the age of 18 with a valid Australian drivers licence can apply.
Please be aware that any restrictions for ‘P’ platers will still apply overseas.

Can I renew my IDP whilst I’m overseas?
No. An IDP cannot be renewed while overseas, as your personal data was de-identified 31 days after your original application as outlined in the terms and conditions. If you require the permit whilst overseas, you will need to apply online
Can you post-date my IDP?
No. Your IDP will be stamped on the date of issue. Under no circumstances can the permits be pre or post-dated.
How long does it take to process my IDP?
If you apply in store, your IDP can be issued on the spot provided you have the correct documentation. Permits that are processed online and opt for the 'pick up in store' option can take up to 2 business days.
Online orders would be delivered within 3 business days if you live in an Australian capital city. Please allow longer for public holidays, regional or international deliveries. Please see Australia Post for delivery times as it does vary depending on your location and postage method.
I’ve lost my IDP can RAC Travel send me a copy?
No. The RAC do not keep copies of IDPs. If you have lost your permit you will need to reapply. Replacement permits cannot be reissued if damaged or lost.
My Australian Drivers licence is about to expire, can I still get an IDP?
An IDP can be issued as long as your Australian driver's licence is currently valid. You must ensure you renew your Australian driver's licence prior to travelling as your IDP is only valid when carried with a current Australian driver's licence. Your IDP will expire one year from the issue date or when your Australian driver's licence expires - whichever is first.
Why do I need an International Driver's Permit (IDP)?
Your Australian drivers licence alone may not be sufficient when driving overseas. An IDP translates your licence into an internationally recognised format and allows you to drive without additional tests, as long as your licence is current. While you may not always be asked to present it, many countries, car hire companies, and travel insurers require or expect you to have one. Always check the terms and conditions of your travel insurance and car hire provider and confirm local driving requirements before you travel.
I can get my IDP online through other sources, why should I get it through the RAC?
Within Australia, only the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) are authorised distributors to issue international driving permits.
In WA, RAC are the only authorised agent to issue these permits. Online IDP cards are counterfeit items and should not be purchased and used.
