Locals urged to have their say on Safer Speeds Trial

The Augusta Margaret River community is being invited to have their say on the Safer Speeds Trial, 12 months on from the roll-out of speed limit reductions across the Shire.

The three-year trial started in May 2025 and covers around 550 local roads, in a partnership between the Shire of Augusta Margaret River and RAC - with support from Main Roads.

From today, the community can participate in an online survey and access an interactive map, as well as attend in-person community engagement sessions over the next month.

The 12-month review is designed to help clarify the impacts of the trial so far and identify any areas where adjustments may be needed.

Augusta Margaret River Shire President Julia Jean-Rice said the Shire is looking forward to hearing the community’s feedback in the 12-month review.

“Road safety is a priority for our Shire, and we are trialling this approach to help reduce the risk of serious crashes across our local road network,” Ms Jean-Rice said.

“Our roads are shared by residents, visitors, school families, cyclists and pedestrians. Now that the lower speeds have been in place for 12 months, we are keen to hear how it is going for our community.

“We appreciate the partnership with RAC and Main Roads in delivering this initiative and look forward to monitoring its impact over time.”

RAC Group Executive Social and Community Impact Terry Durant encouraged the community to provide feedback.

“One year on from the launch of the Safer Speeds Trial, the community has a great opportunity to tell us about their experiences on local roads,” Ms Durant said.

“The trial is designed to create safer roads with fewer crashes, reducing the risk of serious injury and death and making town centres more welcoming.”

“Through the Trial, we aim to make a real difference in road safety across the community, for locals and visitors.”

The 12-month review of the trial will consider community feedback, along with findings from an interim evaluation, which will include analysis of speed and crash risk data.

The community survey is open until Wednesday 24 June at yoursay.amrshire.wa.gov.au/safer-speeds-Trial-review.
