Motorists are being urged to make road safety their top priority, as Western Australians prepare to head away for the ANZAC Day long weekend.

RAC Communications Manager Rhys Heron said there will be plenty of cars on our roads, and lots of families travelling regionally for a quick break.

“Long weekends are always a popular time to get away and this often means driving for long stretches of time on unfamiliar regional roads,” Mr Heron said.

“Many families and friends will be travelling throughout our South West and Great Southern this weekend — these are not only some of our most beautiful regions but also our worst for road fatalities this year.

“Fatigue, speeding and inattention are major factors in road trauma, so we urge drivers to be patient, stick to the speed limit, take regular breaks and put your devices away, so you can enjoy a distraction free journey.”

So far this year, 51 lives have been lost on WA’s roads — 34 of those in regional areas.

Double demerit penalties are now in place until the end of Monday.
