RAC has issued an urgent reminder to motorists to slow down and take extra care on our roads this festive season, with Western Australia recording the highest number of road deaths in six years.
This year, tragically 168 people have already lost their lives on WA roads – surpassing last year’s total of 166 and becoming the highest number of deaths since 2016.
Across our regional areas 108 lives have been lost.
RAC General Manager External Relations Will Golsby said motorists should face the terrible reality of road trauma.
“Far too many lives have already been lost and serious injuries suffered on our roads this year,” Mr Golsby said.
“Christmas is supposed to be a time of joy and celebration, but for many it will be a stark and devastating reminder of their loved ones who are no longer here because of road trauma.”
“The number of people who continue to die or suffer life-changing injuries on our roads is unacceptable.”
“We must see through the statistics. These are real people whose lives have been tragically cut short.”
With thousands of Western Australians expected to travel across our state in the days ahead, motorists are being reminded to take responsibility behind the wheel.
“The festive period is always a high-risk time on our roads, but particularly with more people opting to holiday in our beautiful regional destinations,” Mr Golsby said.
“Our regional roads are some of the most dangerous places to drive anywhere in the country, so we’re asking motorists to take their time, be respectful of each other, take plenty of breaks and ditch the distraction.”
“It’s so important to drive so others survive, because the best present you can give your family and friends is arriving safely.”
Double demerit penalties are now in effect and will remain in place until Sunday, 8 January 2023.
