RAC is urging Christmas shoppers to stay alert when navigating busy carparks this festive season, as data reveals December 23 and 24 were the worst days in 2022 for carpark bingles.
RAC Claims, Compliance and Assurance Manager Glen Walker said 131 claims were lodged for carpark prangs on December 23, 2022, just two fewer than the record 133 in 2021.
“With consistently high numbers during the Christmas period, we need to place a priority on road safety and set a good example for all future drivers,” Mr Walker said.
“Busy shopping centre carparks can be an extra challenge on top of a stressful time of year, with most prangs involving reversing cars, runaway trolleys, poles and railings.”
The total number of crashes in December was 2,232 – double the monthly average.
RAC is urging drivers to follow all road rules and carpark etiquette so a potential nightmare during the festive season can be avoided.
“Look for bays away from the entrance and exit as well as avoiding congested areas and pedestrian crossings,” Mr Walker said.
“If you’re unfamiliar with the carpark you’re travelling to, ensure that you familiarise yourself with the layout before you arrive – or consider taking public transport instead.”
“The holidays are a special time for many people, so we want to ensure that everyone stays safe when navigating carparks.”
RAC’s tips to reduce your risk of a car park crash:
Consider catching public transport if possible
Allow extra time to find a car park
Slow down and follow car park speed limits
Choose a parking bay away from an entrance and exit where there is high pedestrian activity, shopping trolleys and congestion
Take extra care when reversing and don’t rely solely on your mirrors
Use your indicators to signal your intentions to other drivers and pedestrians
Turn on your headlights in dark and underground carparks
Return your trolley to a trolley bay to avoid inconveniencing other drivers
Ensure there is a safe distance between you and the car in front or reversing
