RAC will join country music stars and fans at the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival next weekend to promote the importance of road safety.

RAC General Manager Corporate Affairs Will Golsby said RAC provided a $20,000 grant to the Country Music Club to help spread the road safety message.

“Last year, the South West region had the highest number of road fatalities in regional WA,” Mr Golsby said.

“Western Australia’s road safety record is unacceptable – so it’s important to take every opportunity we can to remind people to be careful on our roads.

“Drink driving, speed and fatigue continue to contribute to WA’s poor road safety record.

“RAC is proud to partner with the Country Music Club of Boyup Brook to encourage festival goers to plan ahead, stay safe on the roads and ensure they make it home to their loved ones.”

This year’s festival program includes headline acts MC Ben Sorensen and John Williamson, the 2016 WA Country Music Awards, the Boyup Brook Art Awards and the Ute and Truck Muster, led by an RAC vehicle.

RAC staff will be at the Saturday morning Street Market to talk to members and festival goers about current road safety initiatives such as the RAC Rescue helicopters. This rescue service, managed by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, recently expanded to include a second helicopter primarily based in Bunbury.

RAC Rescue helicopter torch key rings will help ‘light up the night’ with festival goers encouraged to hold up their torches in a visual display to commemorate the lives lost on WA roads. The audience will be encouraged to make a personal commitment to drive safely every time they get behind the wheel.

“Sticking to the speed limit, avoiding driver distractions like your mobile phone, wearing a seatbelt and staying alert are just some of the ways we can each do our bit to reduce the number of lives being lost on our roads,” Mr Golsby said.

The RAC sponsorship support is part of the $1.2 million already provided to local communities since RAC’s Community Sponsorships program began in 2011.

The Boyup Brook Country Music festival runs from 18 - 21 February 2016.
