A new website will help Western Australians compare how bad their daily trip to and from work really is, find out what else they could be doing with their valuable time and ultimately tell federal candidates they want it fixed with investment in better roads and public transport.

The Australia’s Worst Commute website, launched by RAC in partnership with the Australian Automobile Association (AAA), will allow commuters to input their own personal circumstances and find out how much time they spend getting to and from work each year.

RAC General Manager Corporate Affairs, Will Golsby, said while most people know how much their daily commute costs them, and many know it takes too long, very few people are aware just how much time they spend commuting each year.

“The average commuter will probably be shocked to know they spend between 10 and 15 days every year commuting,” he said.

“Australia’s Worst Commute will help people on some of WA’s most congested roads and those waiting for trains and buses that are late or overcrowded to realise what they could have done with their valuable commute time.

“Congestion is a problem faced by too many Western Australians every day and it’s only set to get worse.”

Infrastructure Australia predicts Perth will have seven of the country’s 10 most congested roads in just 15 years’ time. These are:
  • Mitchell Freeway;
  • Tonkin Highway;
  • Graham Farmer Freeway/Orrong Road/Welshpool Road East;
  • Marmion Ave/West Coast Hwy Corridor;
  • Wanneroo Road;
  • Leach Highway; and
  • Roe Highway.

Mr Golsby said the results can be shared on social media to compare their commute with friends and via an email to local politicians to let them know the problem needs to be fixed.

“Congestion can have a huge personal impact, including time getting to and from work, and that time could be better spent with families, at the gym, learning a language or enjoying a hobby.

“The warning signs are all there. Perth is facing a congestion crisis and now is the time to tell our local federal candidates that we want greater investment in transport projects to keep WA moving.”
