Senior high school students from across regional WA will this week receive critical road safety education while taking part in School Sport WA’s Country Week.

Students from 47 schools will have the chance to take part in a number of road safety activities while competing at UWA’s sports park in Mount Claremont.

RAC General Manager Corporate Affairs Will Golsby said these students are the next generation of drivers.

“Education and discussion can help keep our young drivers  safe on the roads,” he said.

“We want to ensure they have a good understanding of the consequences of bad decisions behind the wheel.”

On 29 June students at Country Week will be able to take part in a four minute, 360 degree virtual reality rescue mission with the RAC Rescue Experience.

From taking flight through to the patient being transferred to hospital, students will get an insight into the real life situations faced by the crew of an RAC Rescue helicopter.

More than 5,000 people have taken part in the RAC Rescue Experience since it was launched in January, including more than 2,300 at eight regional events.

Managed by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, RAC Rescue is the only 24/7 emergency rescue helicopter service in WA, with helicopters based in Perth and Bunbury.

“Having a 24/7 emergency rescue helicopter based in regional WA means the RAC Rescue service can get help to where it is most needed,” Mr Golsby said.

“In 2016, the Bunbury-based service flew 285 missions – a majority of those to the South West and Wheatbelt.”

RAC is supporting Country Week with free water bottles on arrival for students, chill out zone with free Wi-fi and couches and a water trailer to fill up their water bottles throughout the day.

RAC is also sponsoring the debating league where road safety issues such as inattention, alcohol, drugs and reckless behaviour will be fiercely contested for the winning trophies and school prize.

Students will also be able to join RAC Road Ready, a free membership which teaches students about road safety, the learning to drive process and buying their first car. Students who join at Country Week could win a $500 Rebel Sports voucher.
