RAC is urging caution on our roads this long weekend, as a new survey reveals holiday-makers plan to head to WA’s road fatality hotspot in droves.

RAC’s Caravan and Camping survey reveals down south will be the top regional holiday destination over the next 12 months, with more than two-thirds of respondents* intending to visit our South West and 50 per cent to travel throughout our Great Southern.

RAC Communications Manager Rhys Heron said both regions are hotspots for road deaths this year.

“Tragically, 28 people have died on roads across our South West and Great Southern this year, making them our worst regions for road fatalities,” Mr Heron said.

“Our survey shows both regions will continue to be extremely popular holiday destinations over the next 12 months, especially among caravanners and campers — many of whom will be travelling long distances on unfamiliar roads.

“As holidaymakers prepare to hit the road for the long weekend, we’re asking everyone to prioritise road safety by driving to the conditions, taking regular breaks and being patient with each other.

“Long weekends are high-risk times on our roads, and we want everyone to make it to their destinations and back safely.

“We need to remember road trauma victims are more than just numbers — they are real people with families and friends left to deal with the sudden and life-changing consequences of road crashes.”

Double demerit penalties are now in effect for the long weekend until Monday, 7 June inclusive.
