RAC Pet Insurance data from 2018 has revealed the weird and wonderful habits of Western Australian pet owners, including most common names, popular breeds and top claims.

RAC Senior Manager Product & Underwriting, Bradley Warren said RAC received almost 2,000 pet related claims last year.

“Dogs are the clear favourite amongst policy holders, accounting for over 90 per cent of pets insured, with the most popular breeds including Maltese Cross, Cavoodles and Staffordshire Bull Terriers,” Mr Warren said.

According to the data, calling the name Bella, Charlie or Max at your local park is likely to turn a few furry heads, with most West Australians firm fans of giving their pets human names.

Several owners did choose to stand out from the crowd, with Bluebebop Zylva Moo Sheffield, Seigens Jatz Crackers and Cuddleton Princess Darcy topping the list as the most interesting names.

“The most common pet claims were for illness, accounting for over 40 per cent of total claims,” Mr Warren said.

“This was followed closely by claims lodged under our Tender Loving Care option, with pets under one accounting for 55 per cent of claims under this category.

“It’s really great to see Western Australian pet owners invested in preventive treatment for their furry friends, especially from a young age.

“Sadly, pets under one also made up the majority of claims for injury and illness, accounting for over 45 and 55 per cent respectively.

“Young pets are extremely vulnerable, so it’s important to regularly visit the vet for check-ups and vaccinations, as well as for dietary and exercise advice.”
