Preparations are underway for the RAC Pedal Prix as teams begin work on human powered vehicles that will race on an enclosed track along the Busselton foreshore later this year.

RAC General Manager Corporate Affairs Will Golsby said RAC is providing $30,000 to support the Australian International Pedal Prix Inc. to deliver this unique event which is open to primary, secondary, university and open category teams.

“The RAC Pedal Prix gives students and community groups the opportunity to design and build a three-wheeled human powered vehicle which is raced on a closed, controlled circuit over six continuous hours,” he said.

“For more than 110 years RAC has been committed to making WA a better place and events like the RAC Pedal Prix help to do this.”

The event, which is part of the interstate UniSA Australian HPV Super Series, encourages participants from across WA and interstate to explore innovative design techniques to develop the most efficient vehicle.

WA Human Powered Vehicle Association President Stuart Peterson said the RAC Pedal Prix is a program which captures the minds of students and open competitors.

“It helps them develop valuable skills, like problem solving and working together as a team, in a friendly but competitive environment,” Mr Peterson said.

“There are often unexpected hurdles but participants really benefit from being challenged to overcome them.”

Teams interested in participating should register at pedalprix.com.au to ensure they secure a place for the event on Sunday 21 August 2016.

RAC’s support of Pedal Prix WA is part of the $1.5 million already provided to local communities since RAC’s Community Sponsorships program began in 2011.
