RAC has today released its Risky Roads campaign scorecard, revealing almost half of the State’s most dangerous roads and intersections have no budget allocated to fix them.
The RAC Risky Roads campaign — which in 2017 identified WA’s 10 most dangerous roads and intersections based on more than 6,000 community nominations — aims to encourage further government investment in road safety.
RAC General Manager Corporate Affairs, Will Golsby, said the scorecard examined progress made since the results were released in February 2017, and the findings were mixed.
“We’re pleased that works are underway on a range of the State’s riskiest roads, however it is concerning that many remain unfunded and in several cases, it would appear, are not even planned,” Mr Golsby said.

Of the 10 roads and 10 intersections identified, almost half — in areas such as Albany, Capel, Edgewater, Greemount, Mount Hawthorn, Mount Lawley and Oakford — have still not had funding allocated.
“WA consistently has one of the worst road fatality rates in the country and we continue to fall short of road trauma reduction targets,” Mr Golsby said.
“There is an urgent need for the State Government to increase its investment in works that will improve the safety of our roads and better protect WA motorists.
“It’s estimated that Western Australia has an $845 million road maintenance backlog.
“A more strategic approach to road safety auditing is required, as well as a dedicated funding commitment to reduce the maintenance backlog by at least 30 per cent.”
RAC Risky Roads is WA’s largest road infrastructure community survey and is undertaken to provide a snapshot of community perceptions, insight for road authorities and to assist in identifying trends in traffic flow, infrastructure and safety.
