RAC is welcoming an additional $142 million of funding announced in the Federal Budget to roll-out further safety upgrades to regional roads across Western Australia.

Today’s funding announcement for the WA Government’s Regional Road Safety Program is in addition to an already established $455 million funding partnership between the WA and Australian Governments, and a $50 million commitment by the WA Government during the 2021 State Election.

RAC General Manager External Relations Will Golsby said it’s great to see further investment in reducing road trauma across regional WA.

“We are very pleased to see the Australian Government allocating further funding for a Program that will save lives and stop serious injuries on our regional roads,” Mr Golsby said.

“The additional $142 million will ensure the Regional Road Safety Program can deliver more life-saving upgrades which will make our roads more forgiving and address the devastating number of run-off road crashes that occur in regional WA.

“Our regional roads are some of the most dangerous in the country and we’re very pleased to see the WA and Australian Governments recognising the importance of the Regional Road Safety Program to the WA community.”

Fully funded, the $900 million Regional Road Safety Program would deliver upgrades to 17,000kms of roads across regional WA, preventing thousands of deaths and serious injuries.

“The full Program will reduce road trauma by 60 per cent and create significant employment and training opportunities for WA,” Mr Golsby said.

“We look forward to working with the WA and Australian Governments to continue discussions on this life-saving Program to ensure it is fully funded and rolled out as a matter of urgency.”
