Almost 150 beautifully restored historic cars will head to Geraldton for the first time as part of the Veteran Car Club of WA’s Rally West, an international event Western Australia hosts every seven years.

RAC Sponsorship Manager Carina McBurnie said Geraldton will be a hub of activity for vintage car owners over a week in September, as local and international car enthusiasts enjoy the Mid West’s attractions and cultural heritage.

“We’re pleased to be a major sponsor of the 2017 Rally West which is expected to attract around 300 participants from across Australia and as far away as New Zealand, the USA and the UK,” Mrs McBurnie said.

“Our sponsorship of the event is just one way RAC continues to give back to our members and the community.

“The event is reminiscent of RAC’s origins as the first car club in Western Australia, when in 1905, a group of motoring enthusiasts formed to advocate for the needs of the motorised vehicle in an era of the horse and cart.”

“While WA’s transport technology has come a long way since then we take great pride in our heritage as WA’s original car club,” Mrs McBurnie said.

The 2017 Rally West takes place from Sunday 10 September to Saturday 16 September with a number of organised runs taking the entourage to locations across the Mid West.

A community day on Wednesday 13 September will give locals the opportunity to check out the historic cars, including a 1981 Ford Escort panel van that was used as an RAC Patrol vehicle.
