More than 95 per cent of people who already own electric vehicles are satisfied with their cars, despite research showing interest in EVs is declining.

In a survey of 1,095 EV owners, 96 per cent said they’re happy with their decision to go electric over petrol or diesel, with convenience, cost savings and the driving experience considered key benefits.

For 70 per cent of respondents, the top reason for buying an EV was ease of servicing and maintenance, while 67 per cent said they’re cheaper to run.

Nearly all respondents – 97 per cent – said they charge their EVs at home and 79 per cent had solar panels. Two-thirds said reducing pollution was a key factor in their decision to buy an EV.

RAC General Manager External Relations Will Golsby said for people in the market for a new car, EVs can offer many benefits.

“For those who are able to consider them, EVs can certainly be an attractive choice with a range of benefits,” Mr Golsby said.

“We’re seeing EV owners really appreciating the convenience of home charging and how easy they are to maintain.”

Despite these benefits, there are still barriers preventing people from considering EVs.

In a separate RAC survey of 380 people, only 17 per cent said they would consider buying an EV for their next car – down from 34 per cent in 2023.

“More needs to be done to address community concerns around issues like charger availability, and higher upfront purchase costs,” Mr Golsby said.

“It is important the WA Government maintains momentum on its EV strategy, including the continued roll out of new charging stations and associated amenities such as lighting.”

“We continue to call for more action by governments to improve EV affordability and viability for Western Australians.”
