State Budget delivers road safety funding but misses opportunity for EVs, buses

Today’s State Budget includes a $339.9 million investment in road safety, including toward additional enforcement, infrastructure upgrades, and education.

RAC Head of Communications Rhys Heron said the investment in road safety initiatives was welcome.

“Those initiatives include funding for life-saving upgrades to regional roads and metropolitan intersections, and a focus on education and enforcement,” Mr Heron said.

“WA has seen a continued and tragic rise in road deaths in recent years, reaching levels not seen in over a decade.”

“Further action is urgently needed to arrest this trend and reduce the unacceptable amount of people being killed and seriously injured on our roads.”

RAC’s PDF symbol2026/27 State Budget Submission called for investment in:

  • Regional road safety improvements

  • Active transport infrastructure

  • Safer speed limits

  • Electric vehicle charging infrastructure and incentive schemes

  • Measures to improve Perth’s high-frequency bus network

The Budget includes a welcome continuation of affordable public transport measures, and increased funding for the WA Bicycle Network Program.

However, opportunities were missed to better prioritise infrastructure for buses and support the uptake of electric vehicles.

“In recent times, the WA Government has made important investments in rail infrastructure and reducing public transport fares, but further steps are needed to make it easier for people to catch the bus, walk or ride,” Mr Heron said.
