How accurate is my car’s speedometer?
Vehicle manufacturers are bound by the Australian Design Rules (which are the national technical standards for vehicle safety) to ensure their vehicles’ speedometers do not indicate a speed less than the vehicle’s true speed. The indicated speed must also not be greater than the vehicle’s true speed by an amount of more than 10 per cent plus 4 km/h. This means speedos must always read ‘safe’, and the vehicle’s true speed must not be higher than the speed indicated by the speedo. If you feel that your vehicle’s speedo is not accurate enough, there are several instrument specialists in WA that will be able to assist.
