How do I switch from an existing health fund?

You can switch health insurers any time of the year.

Switching your health fund to HCF is fast and uncomplicated. It takes less than 15 minutes to choose the HCF cover that works for you and complete your application form, making sure you don't forget to provide the details of your current health fund. Then HCF will take care of the rest - which includes liaising with your previous fund, so you don't have to.

When you switch funds, there's no need to re-serve your waiting periods for the benefits previously covered - so if you're covered for major dental and you already served your waiting period with your previous health fund, waiting periods won't apply again for major dental with HCF, as long as your new policy has the same level of benefits for those items. If you're switching and upgrading your hospital cover - let's say you're switching from a silver policy to a gold one - you'll need to serve the relevant waiting periods for your new services and for services with higher entitlements.

HCF can assist you seamlessly transfer from your existing provider. Please contact HCF on 1800 649 422 and select option 2, to assist this process.

What if I don’t want my personal information shared between RAC & HCF?

Rest assured that no claims information will be disclosed by HCF to RAC. HCF will only disclose your name, contact details and type of cover held to RAC for the purpose of establishing, maintaining RAC membership records or contacting you about membership. For information about how RAC manages personal information, please refer to RAC's Privacy Policy.

What is the difference between Hospital Gold, Silver and Bronze?

Australia's private health insurance system categorises hospital cover into four tiers: Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Basic. The Australian Government has mandated the minimum requirements for each tier. These tiers help consumers understand what treatments are covered under their hospital policy.

  • Gold: The highest level of coverage, including all clinical categories. It covers treatments like pregnancy and birth-related services, joint replacements, cataract surgery, and heart procedures.
  • Silver: Covers most clinical categories but may exclude some high-cost treatments like pregnancy and cataract surgery.
  • Bronze: Offers a more affordable option with fewer covered treatments. It generally excludes treatments like lung and heart procedures.
  • Basic: The lowest tier, covering only a limited number of treatments. It is designed for those who want minimal hospital cover.

Some insurers offer "Plus" policies, such as Silver Plus or Bronze Plus, which include additional coverage beyond the standard tier requirements.
