Driving overseas and thinking of purchasing an International Drivers Permit? All your questions are answered below!

1. Why do I need an International Drivers Permit (IDP)?

In most cases, your current Australian drivers licence is not enough alone when driving in a foreign country. It allows you to drive overseas without further tests or applications, provided your Australian drivers licence is still current. Whilst you may not be asked for your IDP overseas, many travel insurance and car hire companies expect you to have one. We recommend you read the terms and conditions of your selected travel insurance and car hire company to see whether you need one.

2. Can I apply for an IDP if I’m on ‘P’ plates?
Anyone over the age of 18 with a valid Australian drivers licence can apply. Please be aware that any restrictions for ‘P’ platers will apply overseas.

3. Can I renew my IDP whilst I’m overseas?
No. An IDP cannot be renewed and a new application is required for each permit. If you require the permit whilst overseas, you will need to apply by post. The application form can be downloaded from here. Be sure to include your loose passport photograph, photocopies of your Australian drivers licence and correct payment, to eliminate delays.

4. Can I ride a scooter in Bali with my IDP?
You are permitted to ride a scooter of only up to 50cc on your regular C class Australian drivers licence. If you hold a valid motorcycle licence you are permitted to ride the same capacity as in Australia. Please note a learners permit is not a valid drivers licence and will not be stamped on your IDP.

5. Can you post-date my IDP?
No. Your IDP will be stamped on the date of processing. Under no circumstances can the permits be pre or post-dated.

6. Why should I get an IDP through the RAC?
Within Australia, only the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) are authorised to issue International Driving Permits. In WA, RAC are the only authorised organisation to issue these permits. Online IDP cards are counterfeit items and should not be purchased and used.

7. “I’ve lost my IDP,  can you send me a copy?”
No. The RAC do not keep copies of IDP’s as the physical permit needs to be carried to validate it. If you have lost your permit you will need to reapply. Replacement permits cannot be reissued if damaged or lost.
plication form will be required.

8. My Australian Drivers licence is about to expire, can I still get an IDP?
An IDP can be issued as long as your Australian driver's licence is currently valid. You must ensure you renew your Australian driver's licence prior to travelling as your IDP is only valid when carried with a current Australian driver's licence. Your IDP will expire one year from the issue date or when your Australian driver's licence expires - whichever is first.

9. How long does it take to process my IDP?
If you apply in store, your IDP can be issued on the spot provided you have the required documentation. Permits which are posted in are processed 1-2 business days once received. Please see Australia Post for delivery times as it does vary depending on your location and postage method.
