RAC has launched the third round of its Reconnect WA initiative, providing up to $1 million to local governments to create more vibrant and connected communities across Perth and regional WA.

The new funding builds on the previous two rounds of Reconnect WA, bringing the total amount offered under the program to $3 million.

Local governments can submit applications for the third round of Reconnect WA under two categories:

Category 1:

  • Projects up to $100,000, which are eligible for co-funding of up to 80 per cent

Category 2:

  • Projects between $100,000 to $160,000, which are eligible for co-funding of up to $80,000.
  • Projects over $160,000, which are eligible for co-funding of up to 50 per cent to a maximum RAC contribution of $250,000.

RAC’s Group Executive Social and Community Impact Patrick Walker said RAC was looking to partner with local governments to co-design and deliver projects that help reimagine and revitalise local streets and places.

“RAC’s vision is for a safer, more sustainable and better-connected WA, and we are thrilled to once again provide up to $1 million to help local governments deliver projects that create more connected communities,” Mr Walker said.

“Since the launch of Reconnect WA in 2020, 64 local governments have submitted more than 120 project ideas and more than 5,900 RAC members have helped decide the successful projects through our member vote process.”

Last year, RAC partnered with twelve local governments across WA to co-fund projects including pop-up plazas, pedestrian friendly streets, community artwork and infrastructure improvements to support safer walking and cycling.

Past projects delivered through Reconnect WA have included a transformation of the Canning Hillview Hub, with upgrades to facilities, a new nature play space, outdoor fitness equipment, improved pedestrian crossings, enhanced shopfront areas, and an upgraded car park to be easily converted for community events.

In the City of Bayswater, a revitalisation of Morley included two alfresco style community spaces in front of Morley Library and nearby businesses, as well as streetscape enhancements, which are still underway.

“We have been delighted and overwhelmed with the volume and quality of previous applications, and we are looking forward to seeing new ideas and innovative ways to breathe life into WA communities,” Mr Walker said.

Applications for Reconnect WA will be open for five weeks, closing on Thursday 25 August 2022.
