Road safety will be front and centre during the next RAC Derby, which is set to take place on Sunday 19 July 2020.
RAC General Manager Corporate Affairs, Will Golsby, said RAC’s ongoing partnership with the Fremantle Dockers and West Coast Eagles Football Clubs, including sponsorship of the RAC Derby, provided an important platform to promote road safety.
“WA has one of the worst road fatality rates of any State in Australia, and this sponsorship reminds Western Australians that we all have a role to play in keeping people safe on our roads," Mr Golsby said.
“Our lives have changed dramatically in recent months and our priorities may have temporarily shifted, but it’s critical we don’t lose sight of the risks we face when we get behind the wheel.
“Alarmingly, research suggests risk-taking behaviour such as speeding has increased on our roads during COVID-19 restrictions, at the same time as more vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, have taken to our streets.
“As our regional areas have re-opened to visitors and as some restrictions have been relaxed, many WA drivers are getting back behind the wheel for longer periods, so it’s never been more important to re-focus our attention on driving safely.
Mr Golsby said WA’s football clubs and their supporters were an ideal audience to help encourage safe driving.
“Tragically, people continue to lose their lives and suffer life-changing injuries on WA roads every day.”
“The RAC Derby provide the perfect opportunity for us to reinforce critical road safety messages to thousands of spectators, so we can help reduce the unacceptable number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads.
The sponsorship supports RAC’s advocacy priority to create a safer WA and allows us to deliver more benefits, experiences and memories for our members and the wider Western Australian community.
