What better way to see the world than in your own car? Taking your car on holiday gives you the freedom to travel independently and have control of your schedule.

What is a Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD)?

A Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD, or often referred to as a Carnet – pronounced ‘car-nay’) is like a passport for your car for most African, Asian, Middle East, New Zealand and South American countries.

The CPD is a set of vouchers that are valid for 12 months from the date of issue. It allows you to import a vehicle into those countries for a limited period with a minimum of formalities and customs duties. Customs removes one voucher each time you pass into and out of a country.

A CPD is not required for entering most countries in Europe or the North American continent for touring in motor cars, campervans and motor cycles. In these areas you’re required to sign a personal undertaking to re-export the vehicle within the prescribed time limit.

The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) is a member of the AIT/FIA CPD network that guarantees to customs authorities around the world payment of customs duties on motor vehicles temporarily imported for touring purposes.
