Douglas Gettingby

GETTINGBY, Douglas

Residential Suburb: Duncraig
Occupation: Administration Officer - Retired

I instigated the dedicated left turn lane onto Mounts Bay Road from the Narrows Bridge (1991), the redesign of Riverside Drive near the Causeway (late '90s) and the extended left turn lane from the Roe Highway north onto the Tonkin (2021).

I hope to persuade the RAC council to amend its slogan to "Driving change - changing how we drive".

I believe the RAC is uniquely placed to pursue improvement in how we use our motorways. On-ramp merging issues would diminish if drivers were actively encouraged to speed up and spread out. Many drivers bunch-up on ramps, so we need assistance with signage, spacing and speed displays.

I advocate enhanced use of Freeway variable message boards, a fresh look at speed limits and more effective road safety advertisements.

I contribute letters to the West Australian and I responded to the Minister's invitation to submit ideas to cut our road toll.

Occupation: Emeritus Professor

I am a strong advocate for vulnerable road users' safety and safer community environments. I have led research for 30 years that developed and tested community initiatives to support children and families and that influenced government action, including the 40km/hour zones around WA schools.

I am a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and in my senior leadership roles I have contributed to the strategic growth of several large not-for-profit organisations.

It is my privilege to have served on the RAC Council since 2022, including two years as the Vice President. I am committed to RAC’s vision for connected, sustainable and safe WA communities and ensuring to the best of my ability that RAC members are listened to and served well.
